Professor Tan Arulampalam has been a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in the NHS for over 20 years and has a passion for healthcare transformation through research and education. He has transitioned to a portfolio of private practice, medtech start ups and university academic work with an affiliation to the School of Medicine, Anglia Ruskin University. He helped establish The ICENI Centre where he was a Clinical Director. He has extensive international experience in translational medical research, health system analysis, audit and higher educational supervision. His own research on PET imaging has translated into mainstream practice.
Tan has a portfolio of surgical training with an interest in digital missed reality technology, standard classroom teaching as well as bedside, in theatre, remote and cadaveric surgical pedagogy.
Tan is a Past President of the Association of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and has just stepped down from being a full board member of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery and chair of their Research Committee.
He has published widely in peer reviewed papers and is joint editor of the textbook Essential Surgery. He was part of the ACPGBI group that published guidelines on the management of anastomotic leak, the international anastomotic leak CoREAL group as well as the EAES guidelines on the management of diverticular disease.
He has served on the Medical Board of the charity Bowel Cancer UK. He is in the process of commercialising a medtech device and Clinical Safety Officer to an AI start up.
